Did you know Indiana is known for its beautiful limestone?

Valued for its smooth, consistent texture and easy

workability, Indiana limestone is a delightful medium in

which to carve. It can withstand extreme temperatures

and weather conditions, making it well-suited as a building

material as well. In fact, Indiana limestone has been used

all across the U.S. in buildings such as the Empire State

Building, Rockefeller Center, the Pentagon, Biltmore Estate,

the National Cathedral, and most of the state capital

buildings.

This limestone came from Bybee Stone in Ellettsville,

Indiana. Here, I drew inspiration from a trip to Bali,

Indonesia and its rich stories depicted in temple carvings

and sculptures. The character represented here is based

on Hanuman. In Balinese tradition, Hanuman is a loyal

protector, often found guarding temples and homes. I

lovingly and respectfully bring a bit of Indonesia back with

me to Indiana with the retelling of Hanuman’s story in our

native limestone.
